Welcome !

Portmahomack Harbour is owned and operated by Higland Council Harbours. Highland Council sets the fees for use of the harbour and is responsible for its maintenance and safety.

There is a very long waiting list for berths in the harbour and turnover of berths is very slow. At the present time it is estimated that anyone registering an application for a berth would have to wait 25-30 years before one became available to them! Additionally there is strong feeling among users that Highland Council do a less than satisfactory job of managing and maintaining the harbour! There are at present long overdue maintenance issues such as dredging and slipway repair.

The Portmahomack Harbour Users Group was formed in 2019 following a public meeting held  in Portmahomack. The group desires to further develop the harbour to increase its capacity and encourage further use by commercial and leisure craft.

The group is obtaining estimates and seeking sources of possible funding with a view to at least doubling berth capacity by the addition of additional pontoon space protected by breakwater(s). Two of the group members have purchased the old Coastguard building with a view to transferring ownership to the Group when funds become available and developing it to provide toilet and shower facilities.

The group is also endeavouring to enter a joint arrangement with Highland Council to provide them and the users with local support and harbour management.
